Indoor vs Outdoor Weed Seeds: Real Talk from a Basement Dweller
Look, I’ve been growing the devils lettuce for like 15 years now and lemme tell you – this whole indoor vs outdoor seed debate makes me laugh my ass off sometimes. Cause here’s the thing – seeds don’t give a shit where you plant em. They just wanna grow. But DAMN does your setup matter for what genetics you should pick.
I started out growing outdoors in my backyard back in ’08. Total disaster. Had no clue what I was doing, bought some random bagseed from my cousin Steve (never trust a Steve btw), and watched helplessly as my plants got absolutely destroyed by bugs, rain, and my neighbor’s cat who thought my garden was his personal litterbox. Fuckin Steve.
So lets break this shit down proper-like. And yeah, I’m gonna ramble, but thats how we learn – from other peoples stupid mistakes lmao.
Indoor Seeds: For Control Freaks Like Me
Indoor seeds are basically bred for people who want total control over their grow. And trust me, after that first outdoor disaster, I became the biggest control freak ever. These days I got my basement setup dialed in like a NASA command center. Indoor-specific seeds typically give you:
- Shorter plants (cause who tf has 12 foot ceilings in their grow room)
- Better resistance to humidity issues (my first grow room looked like a damn rainforest)
- More consistent yields (if u dont fuck up the basics)
One time I tried growing this massive Sativa King strain indoors… holy hell what a mistake. Thing stretched like 3x in flower and I had to basically bend it sideways and tie it down like I was doing some weird bondage shit. Now I stick to indica-dominant hybrids inside unless I’m feeling particularly masochistic.
Outdoor Seeds: For Nature’s Wild Children
Now outdoor seeds… thats a different ballgame entirely. You want genetics that can handle mother nature being a straight up bitch sometimes. I got back into outdoor growing last year with some hardcore outdoor strains and lemme tell you – its like a whole different plant.

My buddy Mike (way more reliable than Steve) has been growing this Durban Poison cut outside for years. Thing gets tall as a damn tree and just laughs at powdery mildew. But try that shit inside? Ur gonna have a bad time unless u got cathedral ceilings.
For real outdoor success you need:
- Mold resistance (cause nature is wet af sometimes)
- Tough branches (wind is a mofo)
- Good natural pest resistance (bugs LOVE weed as much as we do)
The Light Situation
So heres where I really learned my lesson about indoor vs outdoor seeds. Indoor, you’re playing god with the lights. I run a mix of HPS and LED these days (yeah yeah I know, but my old HPS still works fine). But outside? You’re at the mercy of the sun.
Last summer I had this gorgeous Critical Mass plant going outside. Thing was thriving. Then we had like 3 weeks of pure clouds and rain. Plant got sad af. Meanwhile my indoor ladies were living their best life under perfect 12/12 lighting. The outdoor genetics handled it way better than some of my indoor prima donna strains woulda tho.

Temperature Tolerance
Bruh. Temperature control is everything. My first indoor setup I damn near cooked my plants cause I didn’t have proper ventilation. Now I got like 4 fans, a portable AC, and more ducting than a commercial building. But outdoors? Your plants gotta deal with whatever mother nature throws at em.
This one time I tried growing some autoflower seeds outside in early spring. Big mistake. We got a cold snap and while they survived, the yield was straight garbage. Meanwhile my indoor autos were pumping out dense nugz cause I keep that room perfect 75F day and night.
Real Talk About Yields
Okay so lets talk about the thing everyone actually cares about – yields. And I’m gonna be real with you – it depends on so many factors its not even funny. But generally:
Indoor yields are more consistent but usually smaller per plant. Like, I know my setup is gonna give me about 4-6 oz per plant depending on strain and if I don’t royally screw something up. My last run of fem seeds gave me 5.2 oz per plant almost exactly.

Outdoor? Sky’s the limit literally. My boy Mike (remember, not Steve) pulled 2 pounds off one plant last year. But he also lost half his crop the year before to bud rot cause it rained for like a month straight. Its feast or famine outside sometimes.
The Cost Factor
This is where shit gets real. Indoor growing ain’t cheap. My electric bill looks like I’m running a small factory (which I guess technically I am lol). Between the lights, fans, AC, humidifier/dehumidifier… shit adds up quick.
But outdoor? Basically free after you buy the seeds. Just need decent soil, some basic amendments, and maybe a fence to keep the neighbor’s cat out (I’m looking at you, Mr. Whiskers, you soil-pooping menace).
My Final Take After 15 Years
Here’s the truth – there’s no “better” option. It’s all about your situation. I do both now cause why not? Indoor keeps me supplied all year, and outdoor is my summer fun project where I can experiment with crazy sativa strains that would never work in my basement.
Just remember – whether ur growing inside or out, the key is matching your genetics to your environment. Don’t be like young me trying to grow thai sativas in a 6 foot tall tent or autoflowers in early spring. Learn from my fails so you don’t have to explain to your girlfriend why there’s a hole burnt in the ceiling from a too-close HPS light (yeah… that happened).
