THC percentages in cannabis have gotten kind of absurd. And I mean that in the best possible way. Back in 2005, getting a strain that tested at 18% felt like finding gold. Today I’m looking at verified tests from strains breaking 30%, and that’s not marketing hype — that’s real lab data from accredited facilities. The genetics have just gotten that good.
But here’s what nobody tells you: chasing the highest number isn’t always the right move. THC percentage alone doesn’t determine your experience. The terpene profile, the ratio of cannabinoids, the way you consume it — all of that matters just as much. A 26% strain with a rich myrcene-caryophyllene-limonene profile will hit very differently from a 30% strain with a flat terpene spectrum. So I’ll give you the potency monsters you came for, but I’m also going to be straight with you about what to expect from them.

The Strains Actually Pushing 28–30% THC Right Now
Strawberry Gorilla Auto (FastBuds) — Up to 27% THC
FastBuds released this one in 2023 and it’s been causing arguments on forums ever since. The strawberry terpene is genuinely strong — not fake candy, actual fruit — layered over that classic GG4 earthiness. Testing consistently at 24–27% in real grows, with some exceptional phenotypes pushing past that. For an autoflower, these numbers are exceptional. You can explore more from this breeder’s lineup on our FastBuds seeds page.
It finishes fast — around 63 days — and yields well. The potency doesn’t come at the cost of everything else, which in my experience is rare at this THC level. Some ultra-high-THC strains sacrifice terpenes on the altar of potency. Not this one.
MAC 1 (Capulator’s Cut) — 28–30% THC
MAC 1 is one of those genetics that changed how people think about what modern cannabis can be. Originally a photoperiod from Capulator (real name unknown, legend anyway), the MAC 1 cross — Miracle Alien Cookies crossed with Starfighter and Colombian — is unusual. Extremely resinous, almost white with trichomes at peak. The experience is cerebral first, heavy second. Diesel fuel and sour citrus on the nose. For the best phenos, visit specific strain sites like chemdawg.com for context on similar Chem-influenced genetics.
Seeds carrying authentic MAC 1 genetics aren’t cheap. And I’d be skeptical of anyone selling “MAC 1 feminized” for €8 a pack. The real thing takes time and money to stabilize properly.
Gorilla Glue #4 (GG Strains) — 25–28% THC
GG4 is the genetic backbone of a massive chunk of today’s high-THC breeding programs. It earned its reputation by consistently testing at 25–28% while delivering one of the most distinctive terpene profiles in modern cannabis. Chem fuel, pine, earthy chocolate. Heavy indica-leaning effect despite being a hybrid. The name comes from the fact that it literally glues your scissors together when you’re trimming it — the resin production is that intense.
You can buy feminized GG4 seeds from several reputable breeders. Just make sure whoever you’re buying from has documented lineage. This strain has been so widely copied that quality varies dramatically.
Runtz (Zkittlez x Gelato) — 24–29% THC
Runtz took off around 2019–2020 and it hasn’t stopped. The cross of Zkittlez and Gelato gave breeders a platform genetic that kept expressing extreme potency while maintaining those intensely sweet candy-fruit terpenes. You can find excellent feminized Runtz seeds from Barney’s Farm, Dutch Passion, and a handful of boutique US breeders who’ve brought proper cuts over and stabilized them.
Check the Runtz seeds listings on our site if you want to compare what different breeders are doing with this genetic. The variation is interesting — some emphasize the Gelato creamy side, others push hard toward the Zkittlez candy end.
Ice Cream Cake (Seed Junky Genetics) — 23–28% THC
Wedding Cake crossed with Gelato #33. If that combination doesn’t already tell you what this smells and tastes like, I don’t know what to say. Vanilla cream, sugary dough, earth underneath. The effect is deeply relaxing — this is an evening strain, full stop. Don’t be a hero and smoke this at noon on a Tuesday expecting to function. Very high THC potential in good hands, genuinely world-class terpenes in the right pheno.

Growing High-THC Strains — What They Actually Demand
Ultra-high-THC genetics are usually more demanding than average. That’s not a coincidence — the genetics that push past 25% THC are often elite boutique crosses bred by people obsessing over potency, and they haven’t necessarily been stabilized for ease of cultivation. Here’s what I’ve learned growing them:
Flush properly. High-THC strains accumulate nutrients aggressively in late flower and you need to flush them well before harvest to avoid harsh smoke. I run a two-week flush minimum. Some growers go three weeks.
Harvest timing is everything. THC degrades into CBN as trichomes amber out. For maximum potency, you want mostly cloudy trichomes with maybe 10–20% amber. Let it go too long chasing those amber ratios and you’ll actually reduce the THC you worked 10 weeks to produce. Invest in a decent digital microscope — the €15 ones on Amazon are fine.
Curing. Seriously. A 30% strain cured for 6 weeks will smoke better than a 30% strain cured for 6 days. The terpenes need time to develop. Mason jars, 62% humidity packs (Boveda 62 specifically), and patience. It’s the most under-appreciated step in the whole process.
For a complete breakdown of harvest and curing, read our harvest guide. And for strain comparisons on potency, the high THC seeds category is the best place to start.
Does Higher THC Actually Mean a Better High?
Short answer: not always. And I know that’s annoying to hear when you just read 500 words about 30% strains.
The research is pretty clear that the entourage effect — the combination of THC, CBD, minor cannabinoids like CBG and CBN, and the full terpene profile — matters more to the quality of your experience than the raw THC number. A 22% strain with an exceptional terpene profile and trace amounts of THCV will feel completely different from a 28% isolate-flavored brick.
That said. For experienced consumers with high tolerance, higher THC content is genuinely useful. You get there faster, you use less material, and the onset is more pronounced. It’s not meaningless. Just don’t let the number be the only thing you’re optimizing for. Look for rich lab reports showing the full cannabinoid and terpene breakdown — good seed banks and dispensaries will always have these available.
Where to Buy Genuine High-THC Seeds
The internet is full of seed vendors making wild claims. “35% THC guaranteed!” — that’s not how genetics work. That’s not how any of this works. Buy from verified breeders with real grow documentation. Barney’s Farm, Dutch Passion, FastBuds, Mephisto Genetics, Seed Junky Genetics, Cookies, Archive Seed Bank — these are names that have earned trust through years of consistent genetics. Find them all at our best seed banks directory.
